Lactation Consultations

Meet with a Certified Lactation Counselor® (CLC) on the Boston Area Doulas team. Our CLCs provide education, counseling, planning and real-time feedback. Lactation consultations can include:

  • Latch and positioning support for breastfeeding parents

  • Customized plans to help with feeding goals

  • Breast pump flange measurements and guidance on pump use

  • Instruction on paced bottle feeding

  • Troubleshoot challenges with bottle or breast 

  • Burping and soothing after feeds

Feeding services

Prenatal Consultation

If you are pregnant and curious to learn more about breastfeeding, you can book a 50-min virtual consult with one of our CLCs! Talk through how to prepare to feed your newborn and learn more about what support from a CLC can look like.

Initial Visit

In-person assessment at your home including medical history and intake, physical exam, observation of feeding, position, and latch, customized feeding plan for the immediate future, and 1 week of unlimited text follow up with one of our CLCs. Generally initial visits are scheduled in your home shortly after you come home for the hospital.

Follow-Up visits

Depending on your needs we can schedule 90- or 60-min follow up visit. We always try to work everything out in the first visit, but keep in mind everyone is learning! Depending on your needs follow up visits will include physical exam, observation of feeding, position, and latch, customized feeding plan for the immediate future, and 1 week of unlimited text follow up with one of our CLCs.

90 min follow up: $260

60 min follow up: $180

Infant feeding and Newborn Care Classes

If you are pregnant and curious about different feeding approaches, we highly recommend taking this private (in-home), discussion oriented and hands-on-class. The class can give you the confidence to jump into whatever feeding journey best fits your family.

Payment Options:

  • Lactation consultants can be covered with a Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) debit card.

  • Some employers are subsidizing doula services. Ask your employer about doula subsidy options. (Carrot does not cover lactation consults, but does cover postpartum visits).

  • When you schedule your appointment, you will be asked for payment in order to book the visit(s). We provide a receipt. You can use this if you are seeking reimbursement through your insurance company. We recommend you call your insurance company to check about eligibility. Many insurance companies provide reimbursement for lactation consultations. The Affordable Care Act requires health plans in the United States cover “breastfeeding support, supplies and counseling by a trained provider during pregnancy and/or in the postpartum period.”  Please contact the Massachusetts Insurance Commissioner at (617) 521-7794 if you think your insurance provide is not offering appropriate coverage.
