Hi, I’m Kara, a birth doula, postpartum doula, lactation counselor and infant feeding specialist on the Boston Area Doulas team.
A little bit about Kara: Growing up, Kara wanted to be a jewelry designer, cake decorator, or farmer. Kara feels she has been called to birth work. Her doula philosophy (and philosophy in general) is to create an authentic and safe space for the birthing person. She walks next to, supports, and advocates for her clients as their own strength and power emerges. Kara helps them to find comfort in themselves and their bodies. Her aim is to be constantly learning and gathering knowledge to better empower herself, her clients and community.
She has built a twenty- plus year career centering on community health and women’s advocacy, most recently managing a state-run community health and advocacy program. She has extensive knowledge and comfort in trauma-informed care and empowering and advocating for women.
Kara lives in Dorchester with her two teens, Luke and Mairéad, who Kara feels are the most amazing individuals. They are different from one another but each fun and funny, super smart, gracious and kind. An enormous dog and a really odd cat round out the house. When free time allows Kara loves the beach, traveling, the Red Sox, boxing and spending time with her kids and wonderful group of friends.
Her advice to families: Enjoy your new little one. Be patient with yourselves and stay open to adjusting and adapting to whatever this new experience brings you.
Check out what one of Kara’s families said about her:
"Working with Kara was the most important thing I did in my entire birth experience. Not only was she calm, comforting, and helpful during my birth - she coached me in a way that felt tailored to me - she made me feel WAY more confident about taking care of my baby when so brought her home. There are so many simple things first time parents don’t know and Kara helped me learn her cry cues, with breastfeeding, bath time, and so many more things."
